Bavarian destination wedding photographer
Every wedding is a fairytale. But… not every wedding is set in the surrounds of a truly literal fairytale landscape. Straight after the wedding of Emily and Pete, I was back in the air, on the road and on my way to Germany. (Side note: driving in Germany is the best thing ever. Fast as you like on the autobahn? Yes please! Highly recommended.) Flying into Munich and hopping into a fresh rental car, I made my way south to Bavaria and, specifically, Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In the winter months, it’s a hidden-away winter sports escape destination. In the summer months, it becomes a beautiful alpine landscape filled with lakes, pine trees, towering peaks and crisp, clear skies. (There’s also plenty of beer, all year round…)
Stunning alpine views
Up a winding hairpin country road, above the town and below the ranks of mist-covered fir trees, sits the Riessersee alpine lodge. I arrived in the middle of the night but awoke to the sound of distant church bells and birdsong. Looking out from my balcony, I could see the surrounding peaks tipped with snow and covered in early morning mist. When I went back to my car it had been replaced by FOUR WHITE HORSES AND A PUMPKIN. No, not really. But what I’m trying to say is… I’m not sure I could even make this up; it was truly stunning! No surprise, then, that this was the destination of choice for Helen and James’ secluded and exclusive wedding day. With only close family in attendance, it promised to be a very special intimate affair.
A hilltop ceremony
After getting ready together in their lakeside apartment, it was time for a short walk to the top of a nearby hill for the ceremony. The setting overlooked the lake and the lodge below, the backdrop a dense coniferous forest. Their celebrant, Brigitte, had created an incredible and personalised service that told the story of these two and their time together. There were also some really beautiful readings from family members; it was such a fantastic ceremony all round.
After some refreshments by the lake, and with some time before dinner, it was time for a portrait session unlike any other. A twenty minute drive away from Riessersee was another ‘see’ – Lake Eibsee (see means lake, so I guess I just wrote ‘lake lake eib’). Lake Eibsee lies underneath The Zugspitze, the highest peak in Germany and the Austria-Germany border runs over its western summit. After arriving, we hiked our way around the lake to one of the most stunning settings for a portrait session. In complete peace and quiet (disturbed only by the occasional hiker), it was definitely one of the highlights of my summer.
Helen and James
Getting to know these guys has been nothing less than awesome. After they nailed their engagement shoot earlier this year, I knew that their Bavarian destination wedding was going to be incredible, and it definitely was. The ceremony that they had put together was truly unique and the setting was unlike any other I’d ever photographed before. Bavaria is such a beautiful place and I came away from it raving to everyone about how everyone should go there! So, once again, congratulations you guys 🙂
